MAY’S SPEECH: 4 OCTOBER

Much hinged on the impact of May’s speech, and she knew it. She’d reflected on what she might say over her long summer break and determined that she would, against her nature, reveal more about herself. Her team encouraged her to do so, recognising that putting words in her mouth, which had reached nemesis-point in the election campaign, did not work. She needed to show that, despite the lack of a popular mandate, and despite her reliance on the support of the DUP, she had a coherent agenda of her own and deserved the party’s and the country’s support. Wilkins recalls the process:

I came back in mid-September just to write it. It was the most personal speech she ever tried to deliver. My approach was to ask her, ‘What is it you want to say? Why are you in politics?’ It took about two weeks to bring it together. We spoke several times, as I worked her ideas up into a narrative.12
